Deputy Speaker David Agius Attends 18th Conference Of Presidents Of Parliament Of Small European States

Deputy Speaker of the Maltese Parliament, David Agius, participated in the 18th Conference of Presidents of Parliament of Small European States in the Republic of Cyprus. The event brought together Speakers and Presidents of Parliament from Andorra, Cyprus, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Montenegro, and San Marino.
Key topics of discussion included “Participatory Democracy: Bringing Parliaments Closer to Citizens”, “Artificial Intelligence: Challenges, Opportunities and Best Practices for Parliaments of Small States”, and “Small States in Turbulent Times of Global Instability”.

In his address, Deputy Speaker Agius reflected on the unprecedented challenges faced globally in recent years, highlighting the ongoing crisis in Gaza and stressing the urgent need for collective efforts to promote peace. He emphasised that Malta demonstrates how a nation’s influence is determined not solely by its size, but also by its commitment to peace and stability. He cited Malta’s chairmanship of the UN Security Council, its tenure as OSCE President during a period of geopolitical tension, and its current Presidency of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers.

Deputy Speaker Agius also highlighted the interconnected nature of today’s world, noting that the suffering of one nation affects global stability. He called on small states to unite during turbulent times, stressing that collaboration strengthens their collective voice and resilience.
Led by Annita Demetriou, President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, Agius and other conference participants visited the old walled city of Nicosia, along the ceasefire line, to show support for efforts towards a comprehensive resolution of the Cyprus issue in line with relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.
During the conference, Deputy Speaker Agius also held bilateral meetings with Cypriot Members of Parliament.
The conference concluded with the adoption of the Final Declaration of the Conference and is scheduled to reconvene in 2026 in the Principality of Andorra.
