Speaking in court today, George Degiorgio said that he and his brother Alfred admitted to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia so that they could avoid a life sentence.
The sibling was testifying in the case that was opened by the duo as they sought a retrial in the case which saw them sentenced to 40 years imprisonment.
The brothers admitted to the assassination, which took place on October 16th 2017 outside the Caruana Galizia home, last year hours before the trial by jury was set to begin.
They filed a case seeking a retrial just one month later, claiming that the last-minute revelation was brought by a lack of equality of arms.
Degiorgio told the court this Friday that on the morning of 14th October, 2022, he saw his brother being carried out of his jail cell on a stretcher.
Being transported to court alone, he later met his brother who was unresponsive and in a wheelchair. Seeing that his lawyer was also unprepared to continue with the case, he decided to admit to the murder.
He was told that, given the circumstances, it was his only option. On Friday, he insisted that the brothers were insistent on going to trial. The case continues on May 30th.
