A magnitude 6.8 earthquake has struck Morocco, with at least 820 people reported dead in latest reports by the country’s interior ministry.
With the epicentre in the High Atlas Mountains, the earthquake struck at around 2311hrs local time, with a 4.9 aftershock 19 minutes later.
‘The interior ministry said the earthquake killed people in the provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant, adding that more than 600 people have been injured.’
Many of the citizens spent the night out in the open following warnings by the Moroccan government to avoid going back into their homes due to the risk of aftershocks and further collapses.
Reports of families trapped under the rubble are also increasing, with hospitals receiving an influx of injured people and the authorities calling for blood donations.
