De La Salle College is set to represent Malta in the prestigious World Schools Team Chess Championships, taking place in Washington D.C., USA.

This follows their outstanding performance at the Chess Interschools Qualifiers held in April, where three De La Salle teams competed among 50 teams and over 150 students. Two of their teams finished in the top six, securing their place in the national finals.

The finals, part of the first-ever Malta Schools Games organised by the Ministry for Education, Research and Innovation in collaboration with Sport Malta, the Malta Olympic Committee, and the Malta Schools Sports Federation, saw De La Salle emerge victorious with a perfect score.

The team representing Malta will consist of Gabriel Gauci, Gabriel Grech, Benjamin Calleja Falzon, Matthew Callus, and Luke Micallef Trigona. They will be accompanied by their captain and coach, Duncan Vella, from the Malta Chess Federation.

The tournament will feature eight rounds of rapid chess, with each player having 45 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move. Four players will compete in each round, alternating between black and white pieces.

The students are currently undergoing intensive training for what will be their first international chess tournament.
