Daniel Attard Appointed As The European Parliament’s Lead Negotiator On Sustainable Tourism

Dr Daniel Attard will represent the Parliament in negotiations on reforming tourism policy to promote sustainability, tackling structural challenges faced by different regions.
The appointment comes at a crucial time, as the European Commission prepares its strategy amid growing challenges in the tourism sector, including issues related to infrastructure, workforce, accommodation, and energy.
Dr Attard emphasised that tourism cannot be considered in isolation, but must be approached alongside related sectors such as transport, energy, sustainable development, environmental protection, and economic competitiveness.
He said, “Tourism should be an economic driver, create employment opportunities, and promote social mobility. The goal is to develop a clear strategy that addresses shared challenges, safeguards cultural heritage, and provides a better future for all including the industry, workers, small businesses, families, and communities.”
Dr Attard also highlighted his commitment to ensuring that Malta and Gozo are included in a European vision that prioritises sustainable tourism development in small regions and islands.
Concluding, he noted that tourism has always been, and continues to be, a vital contributor to Malta’s prosperity and a cornerstone of social progress. In his new role, defending and advancing Malta’s interests in Europe will remain his top priority.
