Peter, a Cocker Spaniel who served with the Malta Customs Department as a detection dog, has died at the age of nine.

During his four years with the Customs Canine Unit, Peter was tasked with detecting undeclared cash and tobacco. He retired in early 2023, leaving behind a remarkable record of service.

Peter’s most notable achievement came at Malta International Airport, where he intercepted €33,164 in undeclared cash in a single operation. Over the course of his career, he registered 84 positive hits, including 27 cash seizures totalling €598,859.

During his time, Peter detected 54 tobacco-related cases, amounting to 150 kilograms, and three narcotics cases, including one involving cannabis and two involving cocaine.

Peter’s dedication and keen sense of smell made him an invaluable member of the Customs team, and he will be fondly remembered by his colleagues for his exceptional service.
