The Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment, Byron Camilleri, has announced new measures to protect workers in the food delivery sector.

Recent months saw the government take a firm stance on platforms such as Bolt and Wolt, he said, making it clear that abuse would not be tolerated.

Applications for new couriers were even refused to ensure existing standards were maintained.

Minister Camilleri explained that the next step is for every worker in the sector to join a union and be covered by a collective agreement. He described this development as a positive move towards safeguarding workers’ rights.

“Even though there were critics, we remained steadfast,” Minister Camilleri said. “We will continue to stress that in our country there is no place for exploitation and that all workers should operate on a level playing field. We will remain vigilant.”

By requiring union membership and collective agreements, the government aims to ensure that food delivery couriers benefit from fair working conditions, while creating consistent standards across the sector.
