Malta is getting its first ever film awards in 2022 and we are HYPED!

Malta is getting its first ever film awards in 2022 and we are HYPED!
Sep 30 2021 Share

Malta’s film industry is amongst the country’s most thriving sectors and as the years go by, this 100-year-old industry proves itself time and time again. A key pillar of the industry’s success is The Malta Film Commission, who, this year have announced the island’s first-ever edition of the Malt Film Awards.

In between servicing and local production, Malta’s cinematic history is rich in talent and excellence and the Film Awards are an opportunity to shine a light on the individuals and projects that have taken the film scene by storm and raised the bar for Malta’s media sector. This, in turn, affects the entire industry and continues to test limits and push the envelope of what the local film scene can be.

The Malta Film Awards will be held at Valletta’s Mediterranean Conference Centre in February 2022 and will be broadcast on Television Malta. The event itself is being organised by the Malta Film Commission, the Ministry of Tourism and Consumer Protection with the Malta Tourism Authority and the Public Broadcasting Services. Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech took the opportunity to encourage local producers and members of the film industry and share his aspirations of continuation in making Malta a ‘world-class film industry’.

WATCH: Campaign to raise money for Jaiteh, injured worker left for dead

Campaign to raise money for Jaiteh, injured worker left for dead
Sep 29 2021 Share

Caroline Galea, the woman who posted the shocking photos and video of an injured migrant worker left for dead on a pavement after a construction site incident, is working to help by setting up a campaign to help the man in question, Jaiteh Lamin. Galea posted to Facebook revealing that Lamin, a 32-year-old from Ghana, was ditched by Glen Farrugia after falling at least two storeys at a building site he worked on. He was allegedly put in the back of a van on a timber plank and, after being lied to about being taken to hospital, was abandoned in Mellieha.

Galea also unveiled that she and her associates are setting up a campaign to raise money to support Jaiteh with Victims Support Malta. She urged the public not to consider this an isolated incident as it would be disingenuous to report it as such. She revealed that Jaiteh, who lost his father and needs to support his mother and his wife and two kids back home, was being paid 50 Euros to work 11 hours a day.

Galea stated that this is a systemic issue in Malta and as a population, we should not allow national pride to stop us from confronting this. ‘We are a society and when these things continue to happen it is not only a reflection on an individual but on us all. And we have to do better. We have to speak up and we have to start challenging ourselves, our politicians, and the people around us. Malta is a concrete jungle being built by slaves.’
