Companies may refuse to hire unvaccinated staff

With the advent of COVID-19 vaccination passports, companies may be able to refuse to hire employees who have not had the vaccine. Many health ministries and governments globally think that the passport scheme could be essential in reopening venues. Ministers were reportedly ‘resigned’ to the fact that they would not legally be able to stop companies from demanding evidence of vaccination.

Vaccination requirements are already being allegedly drafted into contracts with some businesses claiming that staff must be vaccinated against the virus in order to be able to work. Despite this not being an obligation for private employers, they may be expected to track the test status and safety of their workers to ensure the safety of other staff.

Malta among highest ranking EU member in healthy life expectancy

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne took to Facebook to express his pride in the Maltese Health System as Malta scores the highest in healthy life expectancy in the EU. Healthy life years refers to ‘the number of years that a person is expected to live without an activity limitation (disability).’

The life years for women in EU seem to be highest in Malta among EU countries, with an average age of 73.4 years, followed by Sweden and Ireland. For men, Malta only follows Sweden at second place with 71.9, with Norway in third place. Life expectancy for women in the EU was on average 5.5 years longer than that for men.

Eurovision to allow spectators for COVID-19 party trials

The 2021 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, set to be held in Rotterdam, will be allowing up to 3,500 spectators to enjoy the festival live. This will be part of a trial to see what the possibilities of attending festivals and parties during the COVID-19 would be. A test party has already taken place in a small town called Biddinguizen, which saw 3,000 people attending. They all had to present negative COVID-19 tests and wore movement tracking tests.

The Eurovision song contest might be applying some of these same tactics in order to allow spectators to enjoy the spectacle live. With Destiny performing her song Je Me Casse in the first semi-final of the contest, she and other contestants might in fact be performing in front of a live audience for the first time since COVID-19 struck.

Schools among first to open as part of government COVID-19 re-opening plan

ILLUM newspaper has revealed that the government, with advice from Health Authorities, will be announcing the re-opening plans for several institutions, markets and activities. The opening will happen gradually and spread over a number of weeks. Several sources informed the newspaper that the first to open will be schools, followed by retail outlets and businesses related to beauty. The openings will be accompanied by several safety measures that will be announced by the government.

Restaurants and snack-bars might not be among the businesses that open on 12th April 2021. They will open later this month or early in May should the situation with COVID-19 not worsen – such as the introduction of new variants. Schools seem to be the first to open due to their closure bringing difficulties in learning and parents who cannot go to work due to having to stay at home.
