FIFA are currently facing questions after celebrity chef Nusret Gokce, widely known as Salt Bae, somehow accessed the pitch at the Lusail Stadium after the World Cup final and held the iconic trophy.
Gokce could be seen grabbing Argentinian football star Lionel Messi to get his attention despite being repeatedly ignored by the PSG star.
The chef then remained on the pitch among the players and broke FIFA’s strict rules as to who may touch the trophy.
The governing body have very strict rules surrounding the trophy, with the current design dating back to 1974.
‘As one of the most recognised sports symbols in the world and a priceless icon, the original Fifa World Cup Trophy can only be touched and held by a very select group of people, which includes former winners of the Fifa World Cup and heads of state.’
Should there be any suggestion that Gokce was granted official accreditation by FIFA, this could leave them open to allegations of special treatment. Gokce happens to be a friend of FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
