Wied Inċita Open To Public: 20,000 Square Metre Garden Space

Wied Inċita, a 20,000-square-metre green space in central Malta, has reopened to the public after extensive restoration by Ambjent Malta.

This project marks the first phase of a broader initiative to increase public green spaces.

Once inaccessible, Wied Inċita has been transformed into a family-friendly natural park, with 750 trees, hundreds of shrubs, picnic benches, gazebos, and reconstructed pathways for safety and accessibility.

A modern irrigation system was installed to support plant life during hot summers.

The site, previously allocated to a consortium in 2002 for landscaping, has been returned to public use through a new agreement with GEB.

The transformation aligns with Environment Minister Miriam Dalli’s pledge to provide 40,000 square metres of green spaces by year’s end. Other recently opened parks include Spencer Gardens, Hospice Gardens, and Villa Portelli Gardens.

Minister Dalli emphasized the long-term upkeep of these spaces through sustainable materials, modern irrigation, and dedicated maintenance efforts. Looking ahead, 19 additional projects are planned, including green spaces in Pembroke and Santa Luċija.

Wied Inċita now offers a safe, accessible environment with stunning views, natural pathways, and restored rubble walls. Its inauguration included tree planting by local schoolchildren, symbolising a commitment to community and sustainability.

Why Does Santa Claus Wear Red?

Santa Claus, known for his jolly demeanour and signature red suit, did not always wear the iconic outfit. The red attire traces back to Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century Greek bishop who wore red robes while giving gifts to the poor. This figure inspired Sinterklaas in Dutch tradition and Father Christmas in English folklore, whose green robes gradually turned red over time.

In 1823, Clement Clarke Moore’s poem ’Twas the Night Before Christmas described Santa with “rosy cheeks” and fur-lined clothing. While the poem shaped Santa’s cheerful image, his wardrobe remained inconsistent. Illustrations in the 19th century depicted Santa in various colours, including green and yellow. By 1881, cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa in a full red suit, establishing the look more widely.

The red attire became firmly associated with Santa in the early 20th century, thanks in part to Coca-Cola. Starting in 1931, artist Haddon Sundblom created advertisements featuring a red-suited Santa, which ran for over three decades and popularised the image globally.

Though Santa’s appearance has seen slight variations, the red suit remains a symbol of Christmas, blending tradition, folklore, and commercial influence into one enduring icon.

Tyson Fury Reflects On Hard ‘Long Camp’ Away From Home

Speaking on a sit-down interview with Frank Warren, boxer Tyson Fury opened up about his three month stay in Malta, training for his upcoming match against Oleksandr Usyk.

Fury revealed that he has not spoken a single word to his spouse Paris Fury, and that he wishes the match was tonight and that he’s going home tomorrow morning.

Fury is the father of four, but had to say goodbye to his family for a while to engage in some intense training around the Maltese islands.
