Rare Sight Of Monk Seal Off Syracuse: Last In Malta 1974

Rare Sight Of Monk Seal Off Syracuse: Last In Malta 1974
May 18 2024 Share

Marine biologist Alan Deidun shared a video by Siracusaoggi.it which shows a rare sighting of the monk seal – known as ‘bumerin’ or ‘monka’ in native Maltese – off the coast of Syracuse in Sicily.

The sighting took place at the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area and shows the adorable animal splashing around on the water’s surface.

The species was last sighted within Maltese waters during the 20th century in 1974, artist Raphael Mizzi had told Times of Malta after he created a clay sculpture of the same seal species.

Unfortunately, only around 700 of these marine mammals are still alive, leaving them at the cusp of extinction.
