People on social media have been reminiscing about our island’s old peculiar town names after an old book resurfaced online.
The book, titled ‘Ġabra Ta’ Qwiel Maltin u Qwiel Ingliżi li Jaqblu Magħhom’ invites readers on a journey through both language and history. It was published in 1971 and written by Captain Ed Busuttil, renowned for his contributions to Malta’s maritime history.
In his book, Busuttil offers a comparison of Maltese and English proverbs, however, he even provides a valuable list of Malta’s ancient towns and villages.
Some of these names, such as ‘Bubaqra’ and ‘Nigret’, are still used today but for the most part, these old names are now either part of other towns or have sadly been forgotten.
Some peculiar names are those such as ‘Ħal Niklusi’ and ‘Ħal Xluq’, both of which are now part of Żurrieq. Others are ‘Ħal Dimek’, ‘Ħal Pessa’, ‘Ħal Arrig’, ‘Ħal Militt’ and ‘Ħal Birmiftuħ’. All of these have now been joined with Gudja.
Whether you’re a language lover, a history enthusiast, or someone interested in Malta’s unique identity, this book offers a captivating exploration of the forgotten charm of the Maltese island.
