A regeneration project at Wied iż-Żurrieq has been completed, with the boathouse undergoing major refurbishment and a new winch installed to support local fishermen and boat operators.

The project, undertaken by the Department of Public Works, follows consultations with those working in the area. Wied iż-Żurrieq is a well-known coastal site in the south of Malta, popular with both locals and tourists, particularly for boat tours to the Blue Grotto.

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia, alongside Clayton D’Amato, President of the Blue Grotto Malta Boat Service, officially inaugurated the project.

The boathouse regeneration included waterproofing, roof repairs, painting, and a complete refurbishment of the façade. According to the Parliamentary Secretariat, these upgrades are intended to improve shelter for boats and equipment, particularly during the winter months.

The installation of a new winch is also expected to facilitate boat handling, especially in adverse weather conditions.

The president of the Blue Grotto Boatmen’s Association expressed appreciation for the improvements, noting the practical benefits they bring to the daily work of boat operators and fishermen in the area.
