Local champions Birkirkara FC have announced the availability of tickets for their last league match this Saturday, during which the women’s team makes history by lifting their record 12th league title.

The Maltese club has initiated a series of social media posts, all showcasing their women’s team, building up to the eagerly anticipated moment of being officially crowned champions this Saturday. This occasion follows their last league match against Hibernians FC at the Centenary Stadium.

This marks the Stripes’ second silverware acquisition of the season, following their victory in the Assikura Women’s Super Cup in December. This achievement solidifies a strong season for Birkirkara, highlighted by securing a second-place finish in the first-round group phase, narrowly missing out to Zurich FC in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Under the guidance of Coach Mr. Jose Borg, assisted by Strength and Conditioning Coach Mr. Nigel McCarthy, the team reaffirms its status as one of Malta’s top players, boasting an impressive record of 17 wins and 3 draws from 22 matches, with a remarkable total of 84 goals scored. This marks Coach Borg’s second consecutive league victory in his two-year tenure.

Tickets can be secured from tickets.mfa.com.mt, priced at €5 for adults and €3 for children and seniors.

UK Plans To Ban Cigarette Buying For Under 15s

UK Plans To Ban Cigarette Buying For Under 15s
Mar 20 2024 Share

The British government plans to introduce the Tobacco and Vapes Bill in parliament on Wednesday, aiming to fulfill its commitment to eliminate smoking among young people by prohibiting tobacco sales for future generations.

This bill, if passed unaltered, would enact one of the world’s strictest anti-tobacco laws, barring individuals aged 15 or younger from ever legally purchasing tobacco products.

While smoking itself will not be criminalised, individuals currently eligible to buy tobacco will retain that right in the future. Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasised the need to address smoking, citing it as a major contributor to preventable health issues and fatalities.

Critics, including former Prime Minister Liz Truss, argue that the move contradicts conservative principles and have expressed opposition. However, the legislation is expected to pass with support from the opposition Labour Party.

Notably, a similar law in New Zealand targeting individuals born after January 1, 2009, was recently repealed by the country’s new coalition government.

Furthermore, the surge in vape usage among non-smokers and youth prompted considerations for stricter regulations. The proposed bill also includes measures to regulate vape displays, limit flavours, and curb packaging targeted at children to address the growing trend of youth vaping.

In November of 2023, the Maltese government advocated for discussions to prohibit sale of cigarettes to individuals born after a specific date. The proposal was outlined in a public consultation document released by the Ministry of Social Policy and Children’s Rights.

New Popeye Film Coming: Return To Malta’s Popeye’s Village?

New Popeye Film Coming: Return To Malta's Popeye's Village?
Mar 20 2024 Share

A new live-action adaptation of the classic Popeye film is currently in the works.

As reported by Variety, this high-budget project is being developed by Chernin Entertainment and King Features, with screenwriter Michael Caleo attached to the project.

This marks the franchise’s return to live-action cinema since the 1980 release of Popeye, which featured Robin Williams in the lead role of the iconic sailor and Shelley Duval as Olive Oyl, his beloved.

That film was notably filmed in Malta at the purpose-built film set village in Mellieħa. The site has since been converted into a small attraction fun park, open-air museum and seaside resort.

Hundreds of logs and thousands of wooden planks were imported from the Netherlands, as well as wood singles from Canada. A 60 to 75 metre breakwater was built around Anchor Bay’s mouth to protect the set during filming.

Now this is JUST speculation, but could this reboot see the return of Malta’s Popeye’s Village to the big screen? A bit of a long shot but who knows!

Directed by Robert Altman, the film garnered approximately $60 million USD globally, exceeding its $20 million budget.

The most recent Popeye release was in 2004 with Popeye’s Voyage: The Quest for Pappy, an animated Christmas special.
