Bertu Camilleri Celebrates 81st Birthday at Iconic Bertu’s Gym

Bertu Camilleri, the legendary founder of Bertu’s Gym in Għargħur, has celebrated his 81st birthday surrounded by family and friends in the very gym he built into a national institution.

The celebration reflected not only Bertu’s enduring passion for fitness and boxing but also the deep respect and affection he continues to inspire in the local community.

Bertu’s Gym first opened its doors on 10 October 1982, when Camilleri, a former boxing champion, transformed a small space into a training ground for local boxers.

It quickly became one of Malta’s pioneering gyms. As demand grew, Camilleri expanded the facilities, investing in modern equipment and attracting serious bodybuilders from across the island.

Over the decades, the gym established itself as Malta’s leading destination for both bodybuilding and boxing, producing elite athletes who have proudly represented the country internationally.

Yet, boxing has always remained Bertu’s greatest love. His hands-on mentorship of young boxers has shaped generations of talent.

To this day, anyone visiting Bertu’s Gym is greeted by Camilleri’s trademark smile. The gym is more than a place to train, it’s a family.
