Despite the cloudy and rainy weather, the entrance to Mater Dei was filled with the lively sounds of excited dogs and their owners, ready to walk for a meaningful cause.

The event, organised to raise funds for the Association for Abandoned Animals, was marked by emotional tributes, including a salute performed by Malta Correctional Services’ Sergeant Sky, a K-9 service dog, alongside his handler, Sergeant Ian Cuschieri. Standing to attention before a banner of Jake, the officer and his dog honoured his memory in a moment that left attendees deeply moved.

Jake, who passed away in August after battling an extremely rare condition, was known for his resilience and passion for giving back. He made history as the youngest local person to swim 100 km in a pool at the age of 12. Despite his challenges, Jake’s dedication to charity work and love for animals made a lasting impact on the community.

Before the walk commenced, Jake’s parents, Josie and Maruska Vella, received a heartfelt Christmas card featuring a picture of their son from Sergeant Cuschieri. The card was a touching gesture that reflected the deep respect for Jake’s legacy.

As the group gathered, Winter Moods frontman Ivan Grech led a moving performance of the Maltese classic Xemx, with attendees singing along in unity. The event celebrated Jake’s life while also supporting a cause he cared deeply about.

The Vella family thanked everyone for their support, emphasising how much it meant to see Jake’s legacy continue. All proceeds from the event will help abandoned animals, ensuring Jake’s passion for giving back lives on.
