40-year-old suspended police officer Glen Carabott has been granted bail this morning after having been detained on rape charges since April. With a decree handed down by Criminal Court, Mr Justice Aaron Bugeja released the officer against a €5,000 deposit and a €5,000 personal guarantee. Carabott must also observe a curfew whilst being prohibited from bothering or molesting the alleged victim.
Previous bail requests had been denied after the court cited a risk of Carabott tampering with the evidence. The risk was deemed mitigated by the court securing the testimony, via video link of the victim in the last sitting on May 14th 2021. Suspended from his duties, Carabott was charged with rape, non-consensual sexual acts, recording the encounter, sexual harassment and committing a crime he was bound by his duty to prevent.
Carabott was allegedly dispatched to the victim’s residence to investigate a burglary report but this instead resulted in the rape of the woman. The court declared in a later sitting that sufficient evidence was provided to place hum under an indictment bill.
