Residents and citizens of Australia who have been in India within 14 days of their planned return date will be banned from entering Australia starting Monday, with those breaching instruction to face fines and prison time.
The Australian government has stated this emergency situation as part of its measures to stop travel to Australia from India, who is currently struggling with a grave COVID-19 situation.
Health Minister Greg Hunt stated that such a measure, the first of its kind, has been taken to benefit the integrity of Australian public health, whereby measures and restrictions will be reconsidered on 15 May.
India has registered a total death toll of over 200,000 this week, with cases close to 19 million as new strains continue to critically damage the country’s health situation.
