However, during the last act by local band Brodu, an unexpected bout of rain meant the stage’s sound system had to be shut off and protected.

Despite this, the audience wanted more and urged the band to give them one more song – the iconic song ‘Chips.’

The audience knew the entire song by heart and sang the entire track in unison, ending the night with one of the most memorable editions of Rock for Richmond.

Nationalist MP Alex Borg had the opportunity to win the swimming competition during the Xlendi Ġostra.

This entitled him to the Tony Borg Cup, which is named in honour of Tony Borg, Alex’s late father.

Tony was 56 when he died and he was known for his continuous service to the Gozitans. Alex took the time to write a few words in loving memory of his beloved father. Tony had served as a mayor of Fontana and survived six years despite his diagnosis.

A unique feature of the feast in Xlendi is the water sports competition held on Saturday afternoon, featuring swimming, paddle boat, and kayaking races in the bay.

The highlight of the event is the Gostra, which is a challenging activity involving a greasy pole extending diagonally from the rocks over the sea.

Competitors must attempt to slide across the slippery pole to grab a flag positioned at the end.

€40,200 To Carry Santa Marija Statue & Support Mġarr Parish

A family in Mġarr pledged €40,200 to support the parish church, winning the right to carry the Santa Marija statue during the village feast, outbidding another family for the first time in 30 years.

This tradition, dating back to 1923, determines the carriers of the statue through an auction.

Mario Muscat led his family’s efforts, competing against Wistin Vella, who had consistently won for three decades.

The auction, held in front of hundreds of residents, saw the bids escalate until Muscat’s offer of €40,200 surpassed Vella’s €40,000 bid, securing the right for his family.

Muscat’s family was particularly determined this year, as several members had traveled from Australia for the event.

Of the 12 individuals who will carry the statue, three are based in Australia, continuing a family tradition. Eight will carry the statue, while four will serve as pole bearers. Muscat mentioned that his father had also won the honour over 30 years ago.

The funds raised from the auction will primarily support work in the church’s sacristy, with the tradition helping to generate money for the parish.
