As of January: Uniform ‘waste collection’ schedule for all of Malta and Gozo

From next year, the management of the collection and transport of domestic waste will be done on a Regional basis – As determined in the National Plan on Waste Management, with effect from 2 January 2023, the collection and transport of all domestic waste will be done on a Regional basis.

In order to remove the existing anomaly of different schedules in different locations, the Government has announced that from January 2, 2023 the ‘waste collection’ schedule will be uniform for all of Malta and Gozo.

The new schedule which will start from January 2 is as follows:
Monday – Organic waste only (white bag)

Tuesday – Mixed waste (black bag)

Wednesday – Organic waste only (white bag)

Thursday – Recycled waste (grey or green bag)

Friday – Organic waste only (white bag)

Saturday – Mixed Waste (black bag)

The collection of glass bottles will be done every first Friday of the month, and the third Friday of the month.

‘National Workers of the Year Awards’ – Recognising dedication and courage

The President of Malta George Vella encouraged all employers to prioritise the health and safety of workers. During the ceremony ‘National Workers of the Year 2022’ organised by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Social Dialogue, the President referred to workplace accidents, some of which were fatal.

The National Workers of the Year Award recognises the dedication and courage of workers, with the President saying that our country has always been known for the wisdom and courage of its workers.

“Foreign workers among us have increased significantly in recent years. These were, still are and will remain a crucial element in the economic success of our country. While I thank them for their valid contribution, I would like each of them to be treated with respect and dignity for the service they are giving,” said the President. While thanking all the workers for the sacrifices they made during the pandemic, President Vella encouraged employers to continue using the electronic systems even now that the restrictions are a thing of the past.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue, Andy Ellul, said that although the Government’s effort is very important to continue to achieve positive results in our economy, the truth is that these results would certainly not have been achieved if it had not been it was for the courage of the workers and the entrepreneurial spirit of the Maltese businessman. During his speech the Parliamentary Secretary made reference to several legal introductions that came into effect during the last year with the aim of improving the conditions of workers and their quality of life.

Congratulating all the winners and semi-finalists, the Parliamentary Secretary told them that they must be an “inspiration for other companies to embrace the principle of inclusiveness and to recognise that with a good work environment, the workers will be more productive and passionate.”

The 2022 awards ceremony winners are:
• National Worker of the Year Award – Claire Mallia, learning support educator at Stella Maris school.
• Manager/Head of the Year – Ramon Deguara, General Director, Maintenance and cleaning division.
• Team of the Year – Oncology Ward 1.
• Organization that promotes work-life balance – Alliance, Santa Venera.
• Award for the best Entrepreneur – Janice Azzopardi, Broker Malta and Mario Said, Scotts Ltd.
• Award for the most Inspiring Young Leaders – Martina and Carlos Borg, Carisma.
• Award for the Company that promotes Social Responsibility – V Squared and Gadgets.
• Award for the most Inclusive Organization – The Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
• Lifetime achievement award – Raymond Scicluna, Clerk, Parliament of Malta.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina shirt is sold out worldwide

Adidas have completely run out of Lionel Messi’s Argentina No.10 shirt in the lead up the Qatar 2022 final.

The World Cup in Qatar and Argentina’s march to the final has boosted sales of a jersey that was already one of the most sought after and appreciated worldwide.

The shortage has triggered the production and sales of counterfeits, leading the Argentina Football Association to respond to the issue a few days ago, saying: “We can’t do anything about it, although it’s in our interest to sell more.

Argentina is set to face France in the World Cup final later on today at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar. Lionel Messi has already confirmed that today’s final will be his last World Cup match with Argentina.

A trip down memory lane: The last 5 World Cup Finals

The day football fans have been waiting for is finally here!

Today, football history will be written as Argentina and France battle it out for the 2022 World Cup.

As we all prepare to watch it all unfold, here is a trip down memory lane – The last 5 World Cup Finals:

2002 – Germany 0-2 Brazil

The match was played at the International Stadium in Yokohama, Japan, on 30 June 2002, in front of 69,029 supporters, with an estimated 1.5 billion watching on television. It was refereed by Pierluigi Collina of Italy. After a goalless first half, Brazil took the lead through Ronaldo on the 67th minute. Ronaldo extended their lead twelve minutes later. The final score was 2–0 to Brazil. Brazil’s win was their fifth World Cup title, which remains a record

2006 – Italy 1-1 France (5-3 pen.)

The 2006 final took place on 9 July 2006 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany. Italy wond 5-3 on penaltie following a 1–1 draw at the end of extra time. The match is remembered for the Zidane headbutt incident in extra time. Italy’s Andrea Pirlo was named the Man of the Match,. Fabio Grosso scored the winning penalty after goals from Materazzi and Zidane that led to the shootout. Italy’s victory was their first world title in 24 years, and their fourth overall.

2010 Spain 1-0 Netherlands (aet)

The match was played at Soccer City in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 11 July 2010. The final took place in front of 84,490 supporters, with more than 900 million watching on television, and was refereed by Howard Webb from England. Four minutes before the end Andrés Iniesta gave Spain the lead, and the title, with a volleyed shot into the corner of the goal to secure a 1–0 win. Spain’s win was their first World Cup title, as well as the first World Cup win by a European team outside Europe.

2014 – Germany 1-0 Argentina (aet)

The match was played at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 13 July 2014. The final took place in front of 74,738 supporters, as well as over a billion watching on television, and was refereed by Nicola Rizzoli from Italy. Mario Götze, who had come on as a substitute shortly before the end of normal time, received Schürrle’s cross from the left on his chest before volleying a left-footed shot into the net to secure a 1–0 victory for Germany. Germany’s win was their fourth World Cup title and the first since German reunification, as well as the first World Cup win by a European team in the Americas.

2018 – France 4-2 Croatia

The match was played at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia, on 15 July 2018. It took place in front of 78,011 supporters, with more than a billion watching on television, and was refereed by Néstor Pitana of Argentina. France took the lead through an own goal by Mandžukić in the 18th minute – the first ever own goal in a World Cup final – before Perišić equalised. France were awarded a penalty through a first VAR World Cup Final decision – Griezmann scored. Pogba extended the lead in the 59th minute. Mbappé made it 4–1, becoming only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final after Pelé in 1958. Mandžukić later made it 4–2. France’s win was their second World Cup title, following their victory in 1998. The final was the highest-scoring World Cup final since 1966.
