Żibel Launches 1st Marine Plastic Shredder In Malta

NGO Żibel has taken an exciting step forward in its mission to tackle marine plastic pollution, thanks to the support of the Alfred Mizzi Foundation.
The organisation recently unveiled a brand-new shredding machine that will transform collected plastic waste into reusable materials.
Since 2018, Żibel has recovered tons of plastic from Malta’s seabed and coastlines during regular clean-ups. Until now, much of this plastic was stored with the hope of finding a sustainable way to recycle it.
The new shredder marks the first stage in this process, breaking down the waste into smaller flakes that can then be washed, dried, and remoulded into new products.
This system is being pioneered locally in Malta, with more machines planned to expand the recycling setup.
The goal is to create a full circular process that keeps marine plastics in the community and turns them into usable items, demonstrating that sustainability can start close to home.
The Alfred Mizzi Foundation has supported Żibel’s work since 2019, helping the organisation take marine debris recycling to the next level. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to local, practical solutions for environmental challenges.
