Yorgen Fenech's Lawyers Release Statement Stating 8-1 Verdict "Deserves Respect"

Yorgen Fenech’s lawyers have broken their silence following his acquittal in the murder case of Daphne Caruana Galizia, defending the jury’s decision and rejecting allegations that its verdict was compromised.

In a statement to the media, the defence said the 8-1 verdict should be accepted and respected, arguing that claims casting doubt on the jury’s decision were based on false or unfounded information.

The lawyers also addressed questions surrounding opinion polls conducted in the years leading up to the trial. They said concerns about a poll had already been raised in court by the Caruana Galizia family’s legal team before proceedings began.

As a precaution, the defence said, the court revised the pool of potential jurors and questioned those selected under oath about whether they had been approached to take part in any poll. According to the lawyers, none said they had.

The defence further dismissed allegations that jurors had been bribed, describing such claims as unfair to those who served on the jury.

It also pointed to the court’s decision to order police investigations into other leads that emerged during the 55-day trial, while warning that it could pursue legal action if what it described as baseless allegations continue to be repeated.
