Xjenza Malta Launches New Trans-Disciplinary Research Programme

Xjenza Malta has officially launched its new Transdisciplinary Research Programme (TRP), a funding initiative aimed at developing innovative solutions to some of Malta’s most pressing societal and environmental challenges.
The programme was unveiled during a press conference held at the Esplora Planetarium Hall and represents a significant step forward in the country’s research and innovation landscape.

The TRP introduces a collaborative approach to research by bringing together academia, industry, government and civil society through a quadruple helix consortium structure.
Each project funded under the programme will involve a research and knowledge dissemination organisation, a private enterprise, a public authority and a societal organisation.
This model is designed to ensure that research is not only academically robust but also practical, relevant and capable of delivering meaningful results.
Inspired by the missions established under Horizon Europe, the European Union’s framework programme for research and innovation, the scheme will support projects focused on key areas including climate adaptation, climate-neutral and smart cities, cancer, soil health, and the restoration of oceans and waters.
The programme encourages stakeholders in Malta to develop mission-oriented solutions that address local priorities while contributing to broader European objectives.

A key feature of the initiative is its strong focus on impact. Unlike traditional research funding schemes that concentrate mainly on generating knowledge, the TRP supports projects that combine research, innovation, demonstration and implementation activities.
The goal is to produce practical outcomes such as pilot projects, policy recommendations, technological developments and scalable innovations.
Speaking at the launch, Minister for Justice, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima highlighted Malta’s growing success in innovation, noting the country’s strong performance in the European Innovation Scoreboard 2025.
Xjenza Malta Chief Executive Officer Silvio Scerri emphasised the importance of transforming research into tangible benefits that support economic growth, attract investment and enhance quality of life.
Applications for the Transdisciplinary Research Programme are open until 6 August 2026.
