World Maritime Day 2025: Our Ocean. Our Obligation. Our Opportunity

The Malta Ship Registry, within Transport Malta, together with the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works, marks World Maritime Day 2025 under the International Maritime Organisation’s theme: “Our Ocean. Our Obligation. Our Opportunity.”

This year’s theme underlines the shared responsibility of the global maritime community to safeguard our seas while harnessing opportunities for sustainability and resilience. As an active and longstanding member of the IMO Council, Malta remains at the forefront of international efforts to strengthen maritime safety, security, and environmental stewardship.

The 2025 theme provides us with a reminder of the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems and ensure that future growth in the sector aligns with global climate goals. With one of the largest ship registries in the world, Malta plays a pivotal role in maintaining the highest international standards for safety and environmental compliance. The Malta Ship Registry contributes to initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and encourage sustainable practices across the shipping industry, in line with IMO and EU frameworks.

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works Chris Bonett reiterated Malta’s support for the IMO as the primary catalyst for building a more sustainable shipping industry, contributing to a more sustainable planet. “This year’s theme comes at a critical time, when the world is facing major geopolitical and environmental challenges. The competitiveness of the maritime sector remains a key priority, particularly for island nations like Malta,” said Minister Bonett. Looking ahead, the Malta Ship Registry continues to embrace digital transformation.

By expanding automation, adopting artificial intelligence, and advancing the digitalisation of registry services, Malta is streamlining operations, strengthening security, and reducing environmental impact. On World Maritime Day 2025, Malta reaffirms its commitment to protecting the ocean, fulfilling its obligations as a responsible maritime nation, and seizing opportunities to drive sustainable progress.
