Work on the Marsamxett lift is progressing steadily and has now reached an advanced stage. The project is set to benefit both residents and the thousands of tourists who visit this part of Valletta, particularly those who use the ferry service operating between Sliema and Marsamxett.

During a site visit by the Minister for the Environment, Miriam Dalli, and the Minister for European Funds, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, together with representatives of the Valletta Local Council, including Mayor Olaf McKay, and officials from the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation, it was confirmed that the works have advanced efficiently. All complementary works required within the Mandraġġ area and in the lower section near the ferry landing have been completed.

Minister Miriam Dalli stated that the project aims to substantially improve accessibility in the area. She explained that access is being made easier and more attractive so that people can travel directly up and down to Marsamxett. She acknowledged the complexity of constructing a lift within the historic bastion walls but said the intention was to provide better and more appealing access for both residents and visitors.

Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi highlighted that the lift, funded through European investment as part of the wider regeneration of the Marsamxett area, will significantly reduce the difficulty currently faced by those climbing the steep incline. He said the intervention will improve daily mobility while safeguarding the historical value of the site and creating a space that blends accessibility, heritage and quality of life.

Chief Executive Officer Gino Cauchi outlined the technical challenges involved, noting that excavation had to be carried out directly into the bastion walls. He explained that the works required careful manual intervention and the construction of a concrete shaft within the fortifications to ensure modern, safe access while preserving Valletta’s historic fabric.
