Works On Buġibba Regeneration Project Advancing

Works on the regeneration of Buġibba’s main piazza and its surrounding areas are progressing rapidly, with most underground structures and utility networks nearing completion as surface finishing works gain momentum.
During a visit to the project site, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg, and Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett praised the efforts of Malta Tourism Authority and Infrastructure Malta employees and contractors.
They also thanked local residents and businesses for their cooperation throughout the ongoing works.
Project coordinator Jason Micallef, Infrastructure Malta Chief Executive Officer Steve Ellul, and Malta Tourism Authority Chief Executive Officer Carlo Micallef explained that since the project began earlier this year, most underground utilities, including water, electricity, and telecommunications, have been replaced.
These services are now routed through a new walk-through underground culvert, which will facilitate future maintenance and repairs. A large underground rainwater reservoir is also being constructed to service the piazza’s new fountain and landscaped areas.
Reconstruction of streets leading to the square and the adjacent promenade is underway, alongside paving and landscaping installations.
The regenerated piazza has been designed in consultation with residents and businesses. It will feature safer footpaths, new landscaped areas, upgraded lighting, shaded seating, and modern street furniture.
Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg highlighted that the project, part-funded by tourist eco contributions, will revitalise this long-neglected area, creating a vibrant, sustainable space for residents and visitors alike.
Minister Bonett confirmed that the works remain on schedule for completion by May, ensuring a modern, safe, and accessible piazza for everyone.
The ministers were accompanied on their visit by St Paul’s Bay Mayor Censu Galea and other officials from Infrastructure Malta and the Malta Tourism Authority.
