Work Continues In Sicily On Malta’s Second Interconnector

Critical works on Malta's Second Interconnector (IC2) are continuing across multiple sites in Sicily, with major milestones bringing the strategic energy project closer to completion.
During a site visit in Ragusa, journalists were updated by Interconnect Malta and project contractors on the latest progress across the offshore cable, underground land cable and terminal station infrastructure. The visit followed a temporary shutdown of the existing first interconnector, which was required to allow essential works linked to the integration of IC2.
One of the most significant upcoming phases is the installation of the submarine cable linking Malta and Sicily. Contractor Nexans confirmed that manufacturing of the cable has now been completed, with loadout from its Charleston facility expected in December. Cable laying operations are planned to begin shortly afterwards.
Preparations are also progressing for a 300 metre Horizontal Directional Drilling tunnel in Ragusa. The tunnel will connect the submarine cable to the onshore network while reducing environmental and coastal impacts.
Meanwhile, approximately 92% of the 21 kilometre high voltage underground land cable route in Sicily has already been installed. The remaining 1.7 kilometres will be completed once the HDD works are finished, allowing the submarine and land cable systems to be connected.
Infrastructure works are also advancing at the Ragusa Terminal Station, where foundations for new hybrid switchgear, cable trenches and additional fire protection structures are being built to integrate IC2 into Italy's electricity network.
Energy Minister Miriam Dalli described the progress as a major step towards strengthening Malta's long term energy security. Once commissioned, IC2 will double Malta's electricity interconnection capacity with continental Europe while supporting a more resilient and sustainable energy system.
