In a press release it was announced today that construction is progressing rapidly on a building in Tas-Sliema, which will be restored and adapted to serve as a Day Centre for people living with dementia. This initiative has been made possible through an agreement between Active Ageing and Community Care (AACC) and the Archdiocese of Malta, and forms part of the measures outlined in the Government’s Second National Dementia Strategy, launched in 2024.

The primary aim of the project is to create a safe, comfortable, and homely environment where older people with dementia can participate in structured, therapeutic activities led by specially trained caregivers and nurses, ensuring the highest standard of care. The new centre will be able to accommodate between 15 and 20 people daily and will be equipped with facilities that promote wellbeing, independence, and social interaction.

During a site visit, the Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, together with Permanent Secretary Renzo De Gabriele and AACC Chief Executive Steve Agius, observed the progress being made on the building.

“This centre represents another step forward in our vision for dementia care in Malta. Here, people living with the condition will be able to enjoy an active life with professional support and therapies tailored to their needs. It will complement services such as those offered at the San Vincenz de Paule centre, ensuring that every person, regardless of the level of dementia, can remain active within the community, while also providing much-needed respite for their families and carers,” explained Parliamentary Secretary Agius Galea.

This project is a clear example of how the Government is investing in tangible solutions to the challenges of ageing and dementia, while maintaining a strong commitment to preserving and sustainably using Malta’s urban heritage.
