Woman Reportedly Handed Jail Sentence After Alleged Abortion

A woman has reportedly been handed a prison sentence of 18 months suspended for 3 years following an alleged abortion, as reported by Times of Malta.
Back in January 2024, the woman reportedly went to Mater Dei for heavy bleeding.
Times of Malta stated that the woman allegedly admitted to taking something to terminate the pregnancy while at the hospital. However, Doctors For Choice reported that she denied having abortion, and said that she had suffered a miscarriage.
When interrogated by police, the woman denied having taken abortion pills, opposing the doctors’ statements in court, reported Times of Malta.
In a post to their social media, Doctors For Choice expressed their outrage for this situation, stating that “women having miscarriages in Malta are being dragged to court instead of being shown compassion.”
“Yesterday it was reported a court expected a woman to prove her miscarriage was natural and that she did not cause it,” they stated.
In an earlier post, they explained that a “woman went to the hospital with a miscarriage” and “has just been given a suspended prison sentence because she was suspected of causing her miscarriage.”
