Woman Mugged of €40,000 Life Savings Weeks Before Christmas

A woman who kept her entire life savings in cash due to a deep mistrust of banks has told a court how she was robbed of €40,000 just weeks before Christmas.
Times of Malta reported that the woman was testifying in criminal proceedings against Jonathan Felice, 37, from Qormi, and Ryan Briffa, 35, from Marsa, who are both pleading not guilty to charges including aggravated theft and causing slight injuries.
She told the court that she was on her way to work in Paola when the robbery occurred. At the time, she was carrying three bags: one with work items, another with water, and a third containing her savings. A man approached her from behind and snatched the bag holding the cash. Despite attempting to resist and chase the assailant, she was unable to stop him.
A worker carrying out repairs nearby noticed her distress and alerted the police. The woman later explained that she had closed her bank accounts and carried her savings with her at all times, even while working as a cleaner.
Police evidence showed the incident lasted around 40 seconds and involved two suspects, with CCTV footage allegedly linking the accused to the crime. The money and handbag were never recovered. The court ruled that sufficient evidence exists for the case to proceed to trial.
