Will AI Take Over Malta's Next General Election?

An AI video shared to social media by Miirko Sant has reimagined the next general election as an MMA fight between Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition Leader Alex Borg.
The AI video has the two leaders prepping before the big fight, with the audience consisting of the likes of Adrian Delia, Joseph Muscat, Simon Busuttil, Lawrence Gonzi and even former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff.
The two leaders meet in the ring, and exchange kicks and punches, before former PM Mintoff walks onto the ring and slaps both of them, with the referee deeming him the winner of the match.
The video has so far amassed over 31.2K views on TikTok. The question becomes: will AI take over Malta’s upcoming general election?
With the popularity of the technology, such videos, creating hyper-realistic scenarios, could be harmless satire but could very easily turn into misinformation for the less media literate.
AI-generated content has the power to misrepresent candidates, fabricate events that never happened, amplify partisan narratives, and undermine trust in legitimate media.
With platforms like TikTok built for speed and engagement, the creation of such content runs the risk of impacting political turn-outs and voter opinion.
