Wildlife Team Rescue Maghrebian Mouse-Eared Bat In Nadur

The Nature Trust Wildlife Team this weekend were called to rescue an unexpected creature… a Maghrebian mouse-eared bat.

This is the largest species of bat found locally, with a wingspan of around 40cm. Sadly, they are becoming more scarce around the island, with calls for them becoming rarer and rarer.

‘This male adult bat was found at a site in Nadur that is due to have some restoration works to make it safe for public access and for the bat itself. Our volunteer safely collected the bat and released it at sunset near a known existing Maghrebian bat colony’

These animals rescued by Nature Trust cannot be kept as pet. Wildlife volunteers have handling permits and training that allow them to rescue such animals.

‘Since colonies can are mostly located in caves popular with tourists, human disturbance is a major threat. It does not feed on blood, but typically hunts insects and resides in caves.’
