Wildlife Rescue Team Malta: Third Injured Turtle Rescued In Three Days
Local

Wildlife Rescue Team Malta has posted to their social media to raise awareness after rescuing yet another injured turtle in 3 days.

Once again harmed as a result of human activity.

Whilst out on their boat, the Micallef family spotted a turtle in distress, with fishing line visibly protruding from its mouth and tangled in a large mass of rope. Despite facing engine difficulties, the family managed to bring the turtle safely to the Wildlife Rescue Team at Ġnejna after contacting them through friends.

The turtle, now named Sandra, will be assessed by the team’s veterinarian to determine whether she has swallowed any fishing hooks. A treatment plan will then be developed based on the findings.

The team highlighted that three turtles in three days, all requiring medical attention due to human-related causes, serve as a sobering reminder of the harm being done to marine life.

Wildlife rescue Team Malta wrote, “All the conservation work ensuring that every nest hatches will be in vain if juvenile and adult turtles continue to suffer preventable injuries, We urgently need to reassess our practices to better protect these precious marine creatures.”
