Wied Tal-Imġarr Rehabilitation Works Completed: 36,000 Cubic Metres Of Waste Removed

Rehabilitation works at Wied tal-Imġarr in Gozo have been completed, with more than 36,000 cubic metres of waste and rubble removed from an area measuring 9,000 square metres.
The project was carried out with the aim of improving rainwater flow, reducing the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall and protecting the valley’s natural environment and surrounding land.
The works included the removal of invasive vegetation and the clearing of materials that had accumulated over time, blocking the natural waterways and affecting the movement of rainwater through the valley.
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri said the project forms part of a wider effort to improve the management of Gozo’s valleys while protecting natural habitats and reducing risks linked to extreme weather.
“Through these interventions at Wied tal-Imġarr, we are giving attention both to better rainwater management and to the protection of our natural environment,” he said. “The removal of large quantities of rubble and waste, together with invasive vegetation, helps water flow more efficiently and creates better conditions for the regeneration of natural habitats.”
The necessary permits and approvals were obtained from the relevant authorities, including the Planning Authority and ERA, while the contractor and Project Management Team were selected through public calls for tenders.
The project forms part of a wider valley rehabilitation programme covering several areas across Gozo, including Wied il-Kbir, Wied tal-Marga, Wied Marsalforn, Wied ta’ Xħajma, Wied ta’ Mġarr ix-Xini and Wied l-Infern. Some of these valleys had not been cleaned for decades.
