Wied Speranza, one of Malta’s most valued natural valleys, has been brought back to life through a comprehensive restoration project.

The initiative was officially inaugurated by Environment Minister Miriam Dalli and Minister for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, together with Project Green and the Mosta Local Council.

Minister Dalli described the project as an important step in restoring natural spaces for people to enjoy while strengthening the connection between communities and the environment.

Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi highlighted the role of European funds in making the restoration possible.

He noted that investment from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development has been directed towards protecting natural sites, supporting biodiversity and improving the overall quality of life in nearby communities.

He added that the Government remains committed to supporting sustainable projects that safeguard Malta’s natural heritage.

The restoration of Wied Speranza included extensive environmental work. Invasive plants were removed, the valley bed was cleaned and 300 native trees and shrubs were planted to encourage the return of local wildlife.

A new 1.4 kilometre irrigation system was installed to support young vegetation. Traditional rubble walls, an important element of Malta’s rural landscape, were rebuilt and repaired along a 1.4 kilometre stretch to stabilise the valley slopes.

Measures to prevent off roading were introduced, along with biodegradable materials to protect the soil. New information signs will soon help visitors appreciate the valley’s ecology and history.
