Wied iż-Żurrieq Connected to National Sewage Network for First Time

Residents and businesses in Wied iż-Żurrieq, Qrendi, have been connected to Malta’s national sewage network for the first time following the completion of core works on a €3 million infrastructure project by the Water Services Corporation (WSC).
The milestone ends the area’s decades-long reliance on private cesspits, marking a major improvement for public health, environmental protection, and overall quality of life. Progress on the project was reviewed during a site visit by Miriam Dalli, alongside WSC CEO Karl Cilia and members of the Qrendi Local Council, including Mayor David Schembri.
Minister Dalli described the project as a clear example of infrastructure investment directly benefiting communities while safeguarding natural resources. She noted that families and businesses had long faced the inconvenience and environmental risks associated with cesspits, adding that the project permanently protects the valley, surrounding groundwater, and nearby marine environments.
The completed works included the commissioning of a new pumping station, installation of 1.6 kilometres of electrical cable, renewal of one kilometre of potable water mains, over one kilometre of wastewater gravity mains, and more than four kilometres of wastewater rising mains. Over 3,000 square metres of tarmac reinstatement have also been completed.
The project forms part of WSC’s wider €377 million national investment programme to modernise Malta and Gozo’s water and wastewater infrastructure.
