Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that widows will receive the full pension entitlement their spouses were entitled to as part of measures to be introduced in the upcoming Budget.

Speaking during his closing address at the Partit Laburista General Conference, Abela said the Government remains committed to fully implementing its electoral manifesto throughout the legislature through what he described as responsible decisions.

The Prime Minister said the upcoming Budget will continue to support families and businesses while maintaining the country’s stability amid international challenges.

He said the Government would continue taking decisions focused on protecting what has been achieved while ensuring long-term sustainability.

Abela also announced that young people undergoing rehabilitation following a court order will receive two years of social security contribution credits. The measure, which forms part of the Labour Party’s electoral manifesto, is intended to support their reintegration into society while allowing them to receive training in a trade.

During his speech, Abela highlighted several measures introduced during the Government’s first 100 days, including plans for White Rocks to become a national park, the extension of Mater Dei Hospital’s Emergency Department, changes to IVF legislation, free swimming lessons for children and expanded ferry services.

He said the Government would continue working on safer communities and strengthening education while keeping the economy at the centre of its plans. Abela concluded by calling on the Labour Party to remain close to people’s everyday realities and continue providing direction for the country.
