‘Who Will Protect Us?’ African Media Association Malta Reacts To Lassana Cisse Verdict

African Media Association Malta has issued a statement questioning how Black communities in Malta can feel safe following the acquittal of former soldier Lorin Scicluna in the Lassana Cisse murder trial.
Lassana Cisse, a 42-year-old Ivorian father of two, was shot dead in Ħal Far in April 2019, while two other African men were injured. On 1 November 2026, Scicluna was acquitted of his murder and the attempted murders of three men, although he was convicted of grievously injuring one victim. Separate proceedings against Francesco Fenech remain pending.
The association acknowledged the independence of the judiciary but raised concerns about admissions made during the trial, including Scicluna's account of driving around Ħal Far looking for Black people to harass.
The statement also questions what has happened to measures introduced following Cisse's killing, including the establishment of the Hate Crime and Speech Unit in 2019.
It further raises concerns over an Armed Forces inquiry into alleged racism within the military, noting that its full findings have never been made public.
African Media Association Malta is calling on political leaders, law enforcement agencies and public authorities to address racial violence and ensure that Black communities receive equal protection.
The association also called for continued attention to the remaining court proceedings, insisting that Cisse's death should not become a forgotten chapter in Malta's history.
