Who Was Father Patricio Sánchez? The Priest Whose Final Sermon Touched Thousands

The tragic death of Father Patricio Sánchez, who was struck by a falling cross during Mass in Ecuador on Saturday, has captured international attention.

But beyond the heartbreaking footage circulating on social media, who was the priest whose final moments touched so many people?
Born in Cuenca, Ecuador, on 6th November 1973, Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was 52 years old and had dedicated more than two decades of his life to serving the Catholic Church.
He was ordained on 15th October 2005, meaning he had celebrated his 21st anniversary of priesthood just two days before his death.
Father Patricio belonged to the Redemptorists, a Catholic religious order dedicated to missionary work and helping communities.
Throughout his life, he served in several Ecuadorian cities, including Loja, Durán, Vinces, Manta and Guayaquil.
His work included reaching rural communities, supporting young people and providing spiritual care to the sick.
Those who knew him described him as a humble, calm and approachable priest who always made time for others.
His family affectionately called him "Afi", remembering him as someone who remained close to his loved ones despite his religious commitments.
Perhaps the most emotional detail surrounding his passing was the message he delivered during his final Mass.
Shortly before the accident, he reflected on how people often spend their lives worrying about work, money and everyday responsibilities, forgetting to dedicate time to God and their loved ones.
He reminded the congregation that everyone would eventually face death and encouraged them to consider what truly matters in life.
Just minutes later, a wooden crucifix behind the altar became detached and fatally struck him.
While millions may now recognise Father Patricio because of the tragic circumstances of his passing, those closest to him hope he will be remembered for something much greater: a lifetime dedicated to faith, kindness and helping others.
