When Is It Socially Acceptable To Start Talking About Christmas In Malta?

September has barely started cooling down, the beaches are still busy and half the country is still sleeping with the AC on.

Naturally, this means one thing.

Someone, somewhere in Malta has already mentioned Christmas.

But when does it actually become socially acceptable to start talking about it?

September: Absolutely Not

You are still going to the beach, wearing shorts at night and enjoying the last bits of summer.

If you are already playing Christmas music, you are several months ahead of everyone else.

October: You Can Start Hinting

October is the grey area.

You can start saying things like “Christmas is actually not that far away” without getting completely judged.

You can even start thinking about presents. Thinking. Not decorating.

November: Fair Game

Once November arrives, Christmas officially enters the conversation.

Shops start filling up with decorations, festive plans begin taking shape and suddenly every WhatsApp group is discussing Christmas lunches, dinners and secret Santas.

At this point, avoiding the topic becomes impossible.

December: Obviously

By December, Christmas is everywhere. Lights are up, events are happening and Malta has fully switched into festive mode.

So what is the official answer?

Probably November. But this is Malta, where one rainy September morning can be enough for someone to put on a hoodie, make a hot chocolate and start playing Mariah Carey.

And realistically, once the first Christmas aisle appears in a shop, the battle is already over.
