We Want A Legislature Built On Respect & Seriousness, Says Alex Borg

Opposition Leader and Partit Nazzjonalista leader Alex Borg has called for the new parliamentary legislature to be defined by seriousness, respect for institutions and practical results for Maltese and Gozitan families.
Speaking on NET Television following the opening of the 15th legislature since Independence, Borg said the electorate’s decision must be respected.
He said the Opposition would act responsibly and constructively, supporting measures that benefit the country while scrutinising the Government and presenting alternatives where needed.
He identified the cost of living, housing and quality of life as continuing priorities, arguing that the national interest must take precedence over partisan considerations.
Borg welcomed agreement on the appointment of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, describing it as a sign of political maturity.
He added that having a Deputy Speaker from the Opposition benches strengthens democratic balance, and said Bernard Grech has the experience needed for the role.
Borg said the Nationalist Parliamentary Group combines experienced members with new voices, including 13 newly elected MPs and strong female representation. He said he would announce a Shadow Cabinet in the coming days as part of efforts to build a credible alternative government.
He also proposed reforms to make Parliament more transparent, efficient and accessible.
These include weekly Prime Minister’s Questions, faster replies to Parliamentary Questions, more Opposition business and a Standing Committee on Justice. He also supported childcare facilities within Parliament.
Borg said the PN would continue engaging directly with communities, families, organisations and businesses, arguing that trust must be earned through consistent work.
