The new Buġibba Square has officially been inaugurated following an extensive regeneration project led by the Malta Tourism Authority and Infrastructure Malta in the heart of one of the island’s busiest tourist areas.

The project was inaugurated by Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Ian Borg and Infrastructure Minister Chris Bonett, alongside officials, workers and representatives involved in the year-long development.

The project included the complete transformation of the square, surrounding roads and promenade, together with the replacement of underground utility systems, including water, drainage, electricity and telecommunications.

A new rainwater collection and filtration system was also installed to irrigate trees and plants in the area, as part of the project’s sustainability measures.

Speaking during the inauguration, Dr Borg said: “We’re giving a new life to one of the primary touristic zones in our country.”

Minister Bonett described the initiative as a major investment in infrastructure and mobility, noting that the recently launched fast ferry service linking Buġibba with Sliema and Gozo had already carried more than 50,000 passengers within three weeks.

The project also includes five years of maintenance to ensure long-term quality and sustainability for residents and tourists visiting Buġibba.
