We'd Need 50,000 More Foreign Workers For A 4 Day Week, Says Joseph Muscat

Speaking during an interview on ‘X Ray’ on ONE TV with Amanda Spiteri Grech, former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that for a four day work week to work, we would ned to add 50,000 foreign workers to the work force.

Muscat was making reference to a recent proposal by Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg to trial a four day work week in Malta in certain sectors.

In response, Muscat said that according to his own calculations, there would need to be 50,000 more foreign workers in Malta to be able to make up for the ‘extra day of work.’

The factory and the shop won’t close, said Muscat, so the extra day’s work will need to be done somehow.

Borg had suggested testing the initiative in selected government departments first.

He had suggested that if the trial improves efficiency, productivity, and returns, the government could then encourage private sector adoption, while also improving work-life balance for employees.
