“We’d Fail As A Country If We Failed To Ensure A Dignified Life For Everyone”, Says Alex Borg

Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg said that Malta would be failing as a country if it did not ensure that every person has the opportunity to live a dignified life.
Speaking during a social policy discussion broadcast live on NET TV from the Imperial in Sliema, Borg said that budget discussions must take into account all sections of society and not overlook people facing difficulties.
He said that policies must put people at their centre by addressing challenges including poverty, loneliness and mental health. Borg highlighted the PN’s proposal for a National Health Village in Selmun, included in its Nifs Ġdid electoral manifesto, as part of its approach to social policy.
Shadow Minister for Social Policy Ivan Bartolo said that while Malta has consistently allocated significant funds to the social sector, many people still remain at risk of poverty and experience isolation. He said vulnerable people must remain at the heart of decision-making, highlighting the need to support the 109,000 people in Malta who are at risk of poverty.
The discussion included experts and representatives from organisations working in the social sector, who raised issues including housing difficulties, homelessness, addiction, migrant communities and the challenges faced by elderly people without adequate support.
Speakers stressed that laws must be properly enforced and that policies should be developed after listening to people experiencing hardship. They also highlighted concerns about parents struggling to balance work and family life, saying that wellbeing must include allowing families more time together.
The participants concluded that political decisions and budgets must consider their impact on all members of society to ensure no one is left behind.
