"We Also March Because The Work Remains Unfinished," Says The Malta LGBTIQ Rights Movement In Pride Statement

The Malta LGBTIQ Rights Movement, a local NGO dedicated towards achieving equality for queer people, took to social media to mark the celebrations for Pride 2026.

“This pride, we march to honour how far we’ve come, but above all, we also march because the work remains unfinished,” stated MGRM.

The NGO expressed that they continue the fight “for queer asylum seekers facing deportation” and “for community members living without legal pathways.”

MGRM also expressed that they also march as a “demand for truth and justice” for “all victims of systemic failure, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” specifically referring to the cases of Daphne Caruana Galizia, Sion Grech and Lassana Cisse.

“Pride is an ongoing commitment to action over pinkwashing,” stated the organisation, “We will never assimilate. We will never forget our history. We cannot accept comfort while others face violence, and we cannot claim freedom while others remain in chains.”

“Keep marching, keep dancing, keep resisting and demanding for justice. Happy Pride,” they concluded.

During Pride celebrations in Valletta, Dali Aguerbi, a member of MGRM, also delivered a speech, stating that “today we celebrate Pride. We celebrate our identities and our rights. But we also protest. Pride began as a riot.”

He turned his attention to politicians, fighting for the rights of queer people sitting in Maltese detention camps, waiting to be deported “them to countries that criminalize their existence.”

“We cannot accept comfort while others face violence. We cannot claim freedom while others remain in chains,” concluded Aguerbi.
