WATCH: Storm Harry Flattens Benches Along Marsascala Promenade

Benches along the promenade at Wied il-Għajn have been completely flattened following the powerful impact of Storm Harry, with workers now forced to remove what remains of the damaged structures.
Agency workers were seen clearing broken benches along the Marsascala promenade, after violent winds and rough seas caused extensive damage to coastal infrastructure. The scene highlights the sheer force of the storm, which left public spaces unsafe and unusable in several localities.
In response, the Government has announced a nationwide clean-up operation aimed at removing debris, mud and waste left behind by Storm Harry. The Cleaning and Maintenance Division will, in the coming days, roll out a general clean-up programme across Malta, focusing on roads, public spaces and coastal areas.
This follows targeted emergency interventions carried out immediately after the storm to address the most urgent hazards. Several localities have already benefited from these initial efforts, with more works planned nationwide.
At the same time, Infrastructure Malta has continued repair and maintenance works on damaged roads and public infrastructure, while Transport Malta carried out around 50 interventions related to fallen trees, damaged road signs and dislodged billboards.
Speaking after a coordination meeting at the Auberge de Castille, Prime Minister Robert Abela confirmed that regeneration works will begin in the coming months in several storm-hit areas, including Għar Lapsi, Wied il-Għajn, Marsaxlokk, Sliema and Xgħajra. He also confirmed that Għar Lapsi has been closed for safety reasons, with restoration works starting immediately.
The Government said regeneration efforts will run alongside assistance for affected families and businesses, ensuring communities can recover safely and return to normality as quickly as possible. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious in areas where clean-up and maintenance works are still underway.
