Voice For Choice Slams Court Over Woman's Abortion Conviction In Malta

Pro-choice advocacy group Voice for Choice has strongly condemned the recent conviction of a woman in Malta who was given an 18-month prison sentence suspended for three years following an alleged abortion case that emerged after she sought treatment at Mater Dei Hospital.

In a statement released on social media, the organisation described the case as a “failure of medical ethics and criminal laws that criminalise abortion.”

According to Voice for Choice, the case began when doctors at the state hospital reported the woman to police after she presented with complications during a miscarriage.

The group said the incident highlights the dangers of keeping abortion within Malta’s criminal code. It argued that there is no scientific or medical method to determine whether a miscarriage occurred naturally or was induced, meaning women experiencing pregnancy loss can be treated as criminal suspects.

Voice for Choice also criticised advice reportedly given by the hospital’s legal office suggesting doctors had a duty to report suspected abortions.

The organisation stressed that healthcare professionals in Malta are not legally obliged to report patients in such situations and warned that misinformation is eroding trust between patients and medical staff.

The group called on authorities including the Malta Medical Council and the Ministry for Health to issue clear guidelines to healthcare workers.

Voice for Choice concluded that decriminalising abortion is the only way to prevent further prosecutions and ensure people can seek medical care without fear of investigation.
