Voice For Choice Call For Safe & Decriminalised Abortion In Valletta Rally

The Voice for Choice coalition held its annual rally in Valletta on Saturday, calling for the decriminalisation of abortion in Malta as part of activities marking International Safe Abortion Day.

Protesters marched through the capital carrying messages of solidarity with women who have had or may seek an abortion, with this year's campaign centred around the slogan, "Hey sis, I'm thinking of you".

The rally followed months of outreach by coalition activists, who spent time speaking with members of the public in squares and other public spaces about abortion, the organisation said.

According to Voice for Choice, these face-to-face conversations encouraged more open and respectful discussions than those often seen on social media.

The coalition said many people acknowledged that abortion decisions are shaped by individual circumstances, while also expressing opposition to women facing criminal prosecution over abortion.

Voice for Choice argued that abortion is already part of Malta's reality, citing statistics and support services that indicate women continue to access abortion pills at home. It said this demonstrates the need for the issue to be openly recognised rather than ignored.

The coalition also revealed updated visuals featuring the Maltese Rock-Centaury, or Widnet il-Baħar, as a symbol of resilience and its campaign for free, safe and decriminalised abortion.

Voice for Choice said it will continue advocating for the decriminalisation of abortion while providing information, practical assistance and emotional support to women and others seeking reproductive healthcare.
