Vigils Held For Cats In Sliema & Gżira After Alleged Killer’s Arrest

A vigil was held last night in memory of the cats recently killed in the Sliema and Gżira port areas, hours before the suspect is due to appear in court.
People gathered for the peaceful tribute, organised by animal activist Romina Frendo.
The walk began in Cuschieri Street, Gżira, continued through Patri Marjanu Vella Street, and ended in Our Saviour Street and St Charles Street, Sliema, the locations where several cats had been found dead in recent weeks.
Among those present was an elderly man who has been caring for the local strays for four years. Visibly heartbroken, he spoke of his determination to continue protecting the animals and preventing further harm.
The suspect, a 31-year-old Japanese national, was arrested by police on Thursday evening.
He was reportedly found in possession of packets of cat food and latex gloves, resembling those seen in CCTV footage linked to the killings.
A subsequent search of his residence led to the seizure of clothing that also appeared to match surveillance images.
The man is expected to be arraigned in court later today.
